Tarawa Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed October 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Tarawa is the capital and main entry point for Kiribati, an island nation in the central Pacific. Entry is controlled through Bonriki International Airport (TRW) on South Tarawa. All visitors must have a valid passport, return or onward ticket, and sufficient funds for their stay. The immigration process is generally straightforward but can be slow; travelers should be patient and have all documents organized. It's important to note that Kiribati has limited infrastructure and services, so planning ahead is essential. Travelers should be aware that Kiribati strictly enforces visa and entry conditions. Overstaying is a serious offense. While many nationalities enjoy visa-free access or can obtain visas on arrival, the rules can vary, and some travelers must apply in advance. All visitors are subject to a health screening and must declare any significant amounts of currency, restricted, or prohibited items to customs. Before traveling, visitors should verify the latest entry requirements, as policies can change. Accommodation on Tarawa, on the outer islands, can be basic and should be booked in advance. Ensure your passport has at least six months' validity from your planned date of departure from Kiribati.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Kiribati's visa policy is relatively open for tourism, with many nationalities eligible for visa-free entry or a visa on arrival. However, citizens of certain countries must obtain a visa in advance from an overseas Kiribati diplomatic mission or via an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which is being progressively implemented.

Visa-Free Entry
30 to 90 days, depending on nationality. Most common is 30 days.

Nationalities that do not require a visa for short tourist visits.

Includes
United Kingdom European Union Member States Australia New Zealand Japan South Korea Malaysia Singapore Taiwan

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond departure. Visitors must hold proof of sufficient funds and onward/return travel tickets.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Typically 30 days, single entry.

An online pre-authorization system for certain nationalities. This is increasingly replacing the traditional visa-on-arrival system.

Includes
United States Canada
How to Apply: Apply online through the official Kiribati Immigration portal. Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. An approved ETA must be presented upon arrival.
Cost: Approximately USD $50 - $70 (subject to change).

The ETA system is still being rolled out. U.S. and Canadian citizens should check the official website to confirm the current process, as visa-on-arrival may still be an option but is being phased out. An ETA does not guarantee entry; final approval is at the discretion of the immigration officer.

Visa Required
As specified on the visa, typically up to 30 days for tourism.

Nationalities that must obtain a traditional visa prior to travel from an overseas Kiribati diplomatic mission.

How to Apply: Apply at a Kiribati embassy or consulate, most commonly located in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, or the UK. Applications require a completed form, passport photos, flight itinerary, proof of accommodation, and financial means.

Processing times can be lengthy. It is highly advised to apply well in advance of travel. There is no Kiribati embassy in the United States or Canada; applications are handled via the consulate in Fiji or honorary consuls.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Bonriki International Airport (TRW), you will go through immigration and customs. The process is generally orderly but can be slow due to limited staff and resources. Have all your documents ready and easily accessible.

1
Health & Biosecurity Check
All passengers may undergo a brief health screening. Your luggage may be inspected by biosecurity officers for prohibited food, plants, or animal products.
2
Immigration
Present your passport, completed arrival card, visa or ETA approval (if required), and proof of onward travel and accommodation. The officer will stamp your passport with an entry permit specifying your allowed stay duration.
3
Baggage Claim & Customs
Collect your luggage and proceed to the customs checkpoint. You must declare any items over your duty-free allowance, restricted goods, or currency over the declaration limit on your arrival card.

Visa/ETA

Proof of Onward Travel

Fill out your arrival card completely and legibly before reaching the immigration counter.

Health Requirements

Kiribati has specific health requirements to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. While no specific vaccinations are universally mandated for entry, several are strongly recommended.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine Vaccinations (MMR, DTaP, etc.)
  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Influenza
  • COVID-19 (as per current guidelines)
  • Consider Rabies if spending time outdoors or with animals

Health Insurance

Complete travel health insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, is highly recommended but not legally required for entry. Medical facilities on Tarawa are extremely limited, and serious conditions require evacuation to Fiji or Australia, which is very expensive.

Current Health Requirements: As of late 2024, there are no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for entry to Kiribati. However, this is subject to change. Check the latest travel advisories from your government and the Kiribati Ministry of Health for any updates on health screening or requirements.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children under 18 must have their own valid passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is highly advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s), along with copies of their passports. This is not an official Kiribati requirement but may be requested by airlines or immigration to prevent child trafficking.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets is complex and requires an import permit from the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agricultural Development (MELAD). Animals must have a veterinary health certificate, proof of rabies vaccination (for dogs/cats), and may be subject to quarantine. The process can take months. Contact MELAD well in advance.

Extended Stays

To extend a stay beyond the initial entry permit, you must apply for a visa extension at the Immigration Division office in Bairiki, Tarawa, before your current permit expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials and are not guaranteed. Overstaying results in fines and potential deportation.
