Tarawa Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Kiribati's visa policy is relatively open for tourism, with many nationalities eligible for visa-free entry or a visa on arrival. However, citizens of certain countries must obtain a visa in advance from an overseas Kiribati diplomatic mission or via an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which is being progressively implemented.
Nationalities that do not require a visa for short tourist visits.
Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond departure. Visitors must hold proof of sufficient funds and onward/return travel tickets.
An online pre-authorization system for certain nationalities. This is increasingly replacing the traditional visa-on-arrival system.
Cost: Approximately USD $50 - $70 (subject to change).
The ETA system is still being rolled out. U.S. and Canadian citizens should check the official website to confirm the current process, as visa-on-arrival may still be an option but is being phased out. An ETA does not guarantee entry; final approval is at the discretion of the immigration officer.
Nationalities that must obtain a traditional visa prior to travel from an overseas Kiribati diplomatic mission.
Processing times can be lengthy. It is highly advised to apply well in advance of travel. There is no Kiribati embassy in the United States or Canada; applications are handled via the consulate in Fiji or honorary consuls.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Bonriki International Airport (TRW), you will go through immigration and customs. The process is generally orderly but can be slow due to limited staff and resources. Have all your documents ready and easily accessible.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Kiribati has strict customs regulations to protect its fragile environment and local agriculture. All luggage is subject to inspection. Declare all items that exceed allowances or are restricted.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics
- Pornographic material
- Counterfeit currency and goods
- Weapons (including firearms, ammunition, and replicas) without prior permit
- Protected wildlife species (CITES) and products made from them (e.g., coral, turtle shell, certain shells)
Restricted Items
- Fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, plants, and cuttings - require import permit and inspection
- Animal products, meat, and dairy - require import permit and veterinary certificate
- Medications, prescription drugs - must be in original packaging, with a doctor's prescription, and declared; quantity should match length of stay
- Communications equipment (e.g., satellite phones, high-power radios) - may require prior approval
Health Requirements
Kiribati has specific health requirements to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. While no specific vaccinations are universally mandated for entry, several are strongly recommended.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine Vaccinations (MMR, DTaP, etc.)
- Hepatitis A & B
- Typhoid
- Influenza
- COVID-19 (as per current guidelines)
- Consider Rabies if spending time outdoors or with animals
Health Insurance
Complete travel health insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, is highly recommended but not legally required for entry. Medical facilities on Tarawa are extremely limited, and serious conditions require evacuation to Fiji or Australia, which is very expensive.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Complete coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children under 18 must have their own valid passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is highly advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s), along with copies of their passports. This is not an official Kiribati requirement but may be requested by airlines or immigration to prevent child trafficking.
Importing pets is complex and requires an import permit from the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agricultural Development (MELAD). Animals must have a veterinary health certificate, proof of rabies vaccination (for dogs/cats), and may be subject to quarantine. The process can take months. Contact MELAD well in advance.
To extend a stay beyond the initial entry permit, you must apply for a visa extension at the Immigration Division office in Bairiki, Tarawa, before your current permit expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials and are not guaranteed. Overstaying results in fines and potential deportation.
